Attach Your Patch!

Nightfire Patches are easy to attach to a variety of materials, including leather! For the longest lasting hold, we recommend sewing your patch to the clothing you choose. Nightfire Patches' retro-reflective material can be washed, when washing your clothing, but we recommend using gentle detergent, no bleach, and air-drying, rather than using heat. Glue components on the backside of the patch could melt onto other clothing in a high heat situation, while harsh detergents and rough washing actions can damage or fade colors and threads.

For best results, do not peel and stick, iron-on, or sew on until you have determined where your patch will fit and look best.

Peel and Stick Method

Most Nightfire Patches come with a paper backing that can be peeled off, exposing a sticky backside. To use the Peel and Stick Nightfire Patch, start with materials that have a dry, clean surface. Leathers should be cleaned with good leather cleaner (according to the manufacturer's recommendations), and all other materials should be washed or cleaned according to the manufacturers' directions.

Position your Nightfire Patch on your chosen outerwear where you think it will fit smoothly, comfortably, look good, and make use of its retro-reflectivity. Do not peel the backing until you are sure you have determined the final position of your patch. When you are ready, simply peel the backing from the patch, being careful not to touch the sticky back, and place it on the material in your chosen location. Press firmly over the entire surface of the patch. Your Nightfire Patch will adhere best under warm conditions. Do not try to peel any part of the patch off your chosen material, since this will damage its adherence.

Peeling and sticking your patch will provide instant gratification and allow you to immediately take advantage of Nightfire Patches' retro-reflectivity. We have peeled and stuck patches on jackets that are going strong after over 1,000 miles of motorcycle riding at highway speeds. We do recommend that you periodically check your patch for adhesion. Our unique designs often have curves, points, and edges that may require sewing attachment, especially with many materials or meshes, for a longer lasting hold.

Iron-On Method

All Nightfire Patches can be ironed onto any material suitable for iron exposure (we do not recommend this method for leather, or any material that can not be exposed to direct heat). Please do not allow children to perform this operation.

Start with materials that have a dry, clean surface. All materials should be washed or cleaned according to the manufacturers' directions. Peel off the protective backing paper. Position the Nightfire Patch on your chosen outerwear, where you think it will fit smoothly, comfortably, look good, and make use of its retro-reflectivity. When you are ready, preheat your iron to the "wool" setting, turning off any steam. Completely dampen a cotton ironing, dish cloth (thin, "flour sack" style cotton towels, not thick terry cloth), or cotton handkerchief. Place your chosen outerwear on an ironing board, patch in place. Cover the patch with the damp towel, and place the heated iron over the patch. Press lightly for 30 seconds. Repeat, moving cloth so that a damp area remains over the patch, on any area of the patch not previously covered by the iron. Allow patch to cool completely before gently testing adhesion.

Ironing on your patch will provide fast gratification and allow you to quickly take advantage of Nightfire Patches' retro-reflectivity. We have ironed patches onto jackets that are still sticking after over 1,000 miles of motorcycle riding at highway speeds. We do recommend that you periodically check your patch for adhesion. Our unique designs often have curves, points, and edges that may require sewing attachment, especially with many materials or meshes, for a longer lasting hold.

Sew-On Method

A professional is always a good choice particularly if you are sewing onto leather.

If you are doing it yourself, make sure your machine is capable of handling the thickness and type of material you are working with. Do not sew in the retroreflective material. Some machines and needles can tear the material. Sew in the embroidered edging area only. Peel off the protective backing paper. This exposes the self sticking adhesive which will help you keep the patch positioned during sewing.
